Diving into history to unravel the mystery of a 300yearold mermaid with a human face and tail. Scientists are on the case

Scientists will examine a modified “mermaid” that is said to grant immortality to anyone who tastes its flesh to reveal its true nature.

The mysterious 30 centimeter creature was supposedly captured in the Pacific Ocean, off the Japanese island of Shikoku, between 1736 and 1741, and is now kept in a temple in the city of Asakuchi.

With a grimacing face, pointed teeth, two hands, and hair on his head and forehead, he has an eerily human appearance, except for his fish-like lower half.

Now, researchers from the Kurashiki University of Sciences and Arts have taken it upon themselves to perform a computerized tomography in an attempt to unravel its secrets.

Hiroshi Kinosнιтa of the Okayama Folklore Society, who came up with the project, said the strange creature could have religious significance.

“Japanese mermaids have a legend of immortality,” he said.

“It is said that if you eat the flesh of a mermaid, you will never die.”

“There is a legend in many parts of Japan that says that a woman accidentally ate the flesh of a mermaid and was 800 years old.”

“This legend of the ‘Yao-Bikuni’ is also preserved near the temple where the mermaid girl was found.”

“I heard that some people, believing in the legend, used to eat mermaid mine scales.”

In the era of Covid-19, a mermaid could also be an ominous omen, folklore suggests.

“There is also a legend that a mermaid predicted an infectious disease,” Hiroshi said.

Next to the mummy was a historical letter dated 1903, apparently written by a former owner, which tells a story about its provenance.

“A mermaid was trapped in a fishing net in the sea off Kochi Prefecture,” the letter states.

“The fishermen who caught it didn’t know it was a mermaid, but they took it to Osaka and thought of it as an unusual fish. “My ancestors bought it and kept it as a family treasure.”

It is not clear how or when the mummy arrived at the Enjuin Temple in Asakuchi.

But the head priest, Kozen Kuida, said it was displayed in a closet about 40 years ago and is now kept in a fireproof safe.

“Lo heмos adorado, con la esperanza de que ayudara a aliʋiar la pandeмia de coronaʋirus, aunque sea ligeraмente”, dijo al periódico japonés The Asahi ShiмƄun.

Continuó: “Creo que está hecho de aniмales ʋiʋos y nos gustaría identificarlos мediante toмografías coмputarizadas o prueƄas de ADN”.

Barnuм, cuya ʋida inspiró el éxito de taquilla de 2017 The Greatest Showмan, en su Museo Aмericano de Nueʋa York antes de que se incendiara en 1865.
