World’s Oldest Living Thing Found: Giant 2,400-Year-Old Mushroom

A giant mushroom that is believed to be the world’s oldest living thing has been discovered in the United States. The mushroom, which has been named Armillaria ostoyae, is estimated to be around 2,400 years old and covers an area of approximately 2,200 acres in the Malheur National Forest in Oregon. The discovery of this ancient mushroom is significant, as it provides insight into the longevity and resilience of these unique organisms. While most mushrooms have a lifespan of just a few days or weeks, Armillaria ostoyae has been thriving for thousands of years, surviving droughts, fires, and other environmental challenges.

The Amillaia ostoyae, often known as the honey mushroom, originated from a single spore too small to be carried by the wind. It has been removing its lack of soestring filaments across the forest for an estimated 2,400 years, causing trees to lose their leaves.
